How to Start Green Streets in Your Community

Green Streets started in Cambridge, Massachusetts (click here for the Green Streets Initiative)

Co-founded by Janie Katz-Christy in March of 2006, it has since grown to include organizations from other neighboring and distant cities and towns – like our own version here in Portland, started in September 2007!

Part of Green Streets’ success has been its small, but repeating, commitment. Even if people don’t participate the first month, they become aware, and often join in the next month (if not also during the month).

It has been most impressive to see the changes that have resulted in people’s habits by publicizing this event and offering small incentives and recognition. Those who regularly “go green” feel appreciated, as well as those who try it out for the first time.  And the sense of community it engenders is wonderful.
