Edgar Bean’s editorial in the Forecaster two weeks ago gave half the story on carbon credits. He said they are ineffective because they satisfy our guilt. His examples were about buying carbon credits to justify driving a Hummer, or purchasing new items that increased energy use.
The other side of the issue is for those who intentionally and significantly reduce their energy use dependence on carbon fuels AND then buy energy credits to off set the necessary use of those carbon footprint fuels. I walk and ride the bus or with friends to get to work. I use about 18 gallons a month in my truck for necessary trips. What is the carbon credit equivalent of the fossel fuel used a month? That is what I would like to buy to offset the remainder of my carbon footprint. Can Green Streets sell carbon credits as an incentive for Green Friday? This might also be an alternative for those who must use their cars due to life choices to live in the rural areas where they enjoy a long slow ride to work and leave a huge carbon footprint ideling in traffic lines. On Green Friday they could buy carbon credits for their monthly use of carbon fuels in commuting and then qualify for participation in the movement to Go Green.
